I just got a laptop with W7.
I cannot connect to a printer attached to my home workstation via a USB cable.  Windows 7 'sees' it; but, I cannot connect.  I have downloaded the driver and installed it for the printer; but, no success.

What is the make and model of the printer you are trying to connect?
2.
Are the computers and printer present on a home network?
3.
What happens when you try printing?
 
You may also use the Printer Troubleshooter and check if it lists the exact issue -

You will also have to make sure that the home workstation computer always has to be powered up; otherwise the rest of the network won't be able to access the shared printer.
