Automatic update not configures and now computer wont bootup - Windows 8

My computer did (or failed to do!) an automatic update last night and when I've come to use it today it wont start up after I've turned it off.
All I get is a black screen, windows doesn't load and it doesn't even go through the Windows 8 automatic repair
system.
 The computer is only about 6 months old.
Any help would be much appreciated given that the manufacturer's helpline is only open Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm.
